Culture Code 2. ‘Hap-Juk-Seon’

 

Hapjukseon is a variety of Buchae, is a foldable fan with spokes made of double slips of bamboo.

 

*Buchae is handmade, handheld fan shaken with the hands to create wind mostly for cooling off used by Korean people of all ages in the past. Besides using them to endure the hot weather, Buchae were used in various parts of their everyday lives,  such as when going out, lighting up fire, or using a charcoal iron.
